Top Ten Tips On Starting A Blog!

‘How did you get into blogging?” and “How do you start a blog?” These are two questions I get asked quite a lot… So I figured I would write a blog post all about my tips on starting a blog, hopefully, fingers crossed someone will find this post useful! casetify iphone case

1.First things first…
Anyone can start a blog, it doesn’t matter how old you are, blogging is for everyone.

2. Platforms
First of all you need a platform to blog on! The most common used websites for blogging are Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr. Research the platforms and find out which one you think would be best for you. All of the ones I mentioned are free to create your blog on. ( is for self-hosted, but is free) If you want to test out the waters before you put money into your hobby you don’t need to buy your own domain just yet, if you don’t want to.

3. Write about your passions.
Pick something you are really passionate about, for me it was wanting to share my photography with others, that’s why I started my blog. If you are passionate about something you will want to write about it, you will want to create content and it will be fun and enjoyable (which is important!) There are no rules when it comes to blogging, so whether you want to blog about cooking, fashion, parenting or even just an online diary, someone out there will want to read it, trust me!

4. Be realistic but don’t give up!
Don’t be disheartened and delete your entire blog in a strop after your first post gets no comments. You aren’t going to gain 100 readers overnight, gaining loyal readers takes time. Everyone starts somewhere!

5. Try and be consistent.
Try and post often, I am not talking every single day or you will burn yourself out early and want to quit. Keep creating fresh, new content there’s nothing worse than finding a blog I love, wanting to add it to my bookmarks and then realising for some reason they haven’t posted for 3 months and have dropped off the face of the earth.

6. Be yourself.
Personally, I love blogs that I feel can relate too, I like to see a picture of you, and know your name, so I can really get a feel for the person behind the blog! It’s amazing how many girls journeys I have followed, I have seen them get married, seen them start a family, yet I have never met them, but I feel like I know them… I think that’s amazing.

7. Blog design is important.
Don’t make your blog difficult for people to read. Make sure it is easily accessible on mobiles and tablets as well as desktops! You want people to come back and visit your blog, keep it simple… Keep your layout nice and clean, large pop-up ads / ad videos that blast music at the user are probably a huge no-no, make it easy for people to comment, you want your readers to engage with your posts (that’s my favourite part of blogging, I love reading all of your lovely comments!)

8. Hold off on the equipment.
You don’t need to splash out on hosting, lighting and a fancy expensive Dslr right away (or at all if you don’t want too!) Some of my favourite bloggers are instagram based and just use their iPhones for photography.

9. Engage
Get to know other bloggers, engage in online twitter chats, leave comments on blog posts that you really enjoyed reading and just enjoy being a part of the community and get to know other blogs and bloggers who share similar interests as you do!

10. Content is key.
Good content is the key to having readers coming back time and time again, there’s some blogs that I absolutely love curling up with a hot chocolate and reading through their most recent posts!

I love that I am seeing these types of posts from my favorite bloggers! It feels like my inbox knows just want I need right now. I am still working out the kinks before my new blog goes live, but you are definitely someone that I look up to! That in mind, I have a question: how do you feel about using stock photos? I am terrible with photography and find that I am working during most of the hours that I’d get good lighting. It just doesn’t seem like something I want to focus on at this point.

    Thanks in advance 🙂

Hi Kat! Thanks for the lovely comment 🙂
I personally wouldnt use them myself – but that’s because I enjoy and love taking my own photo’s thats all.
I don’t think theres anything wrong whatsoever with people using stock photo’s though, the only issue is sometimes stock photos (popular ones) will be used a lot in the ‘blogosphere’ so people may see it pop up a few times on other blogs, and if you are trying to establish a ‘brand’ for your blog for example I can recognise popular bloggers photographs just by looking at them i could tell you who took it – but if this isn’t your focus at the moment I wouldnt worry about it … just enjoy your blog!

I think it depends on what you blog about! I enjoy photography, so my blog is very visual-based/photography-based. My blog is a personal lifestyle blog, so I enjoy including my own snapshots in addition to my writing. I follow a lot of bloggers, especially business bloggers, who are more focused on their content, so they mostly use stock photos or simple graphics. One of my favourite bloggers, Jen Carrington, shares excellent resources about stock photography, and you can check it out HERE 🙂 -Audrey | Brunch at Audrey’s

I can’t believe I didn’t see both of your replies until tonight, but I’m glad I did! I so appreciate the feedback and advice. So far I have done 3 posts and have only used 1 stock photo… Which means the quality of my photos in general isn’t great but it’s authentic! LOL!

Audrey, thank you for the link! I will definitely check it out tomorrow when my computer isn’t on the brink of battery-death 😉

This is a really sweet post with some great tips! I’ve dipped in and out of your blog since starting my first ever blog back in 2012 and have recently delved back into it with a vengeance. I’ve only ever used very basic stuff for my blog and I’m pretty happy with that so I think you’re bang on about people not splashing out right away, too! 🙂

Really good post! I really enjoy reading tips and tricks about blogging as most of the time I do learn something new even though I have blogging for a while. Furthermore, it is always good to have a reminder as it makes you think of where you started and reanalyse your own journey. 🙂 Glad to see that someone agrees that an expensive camera is not necessary and that a phone will do just fine.

So good to read this, I started a blog last year and know I haven’t been as consistent as I should of been due to moving house and having a baby but will use these tips when I start it up again. I love reading your blog and seeing your photos I find them so calming after a busy day.

I find that this post is really helpful to bloggers. I myself, sometimes lack motivation as the minute I see something I don’t like, I give up. But it’s so important never to give up, because you really don’t know where you’re heading next with your blog. I hated my blog a few months ago, and now I absolutely LOVE it and will continue to, but it’s the fact that now I can’t imagine ever-not blogging because there’s something so warm and comforting about it. It really is a great hobby to have.

    Hey Becky!

I found your blog a few weeks ago and you’re that type of person/blogger I could spend hours on reading their recent posts! Thanks for your amazing tips! I have started a while ago and I’m still no professional blogger (and will never be haha) One question: when did you start blogging?

Thank you for a lovely honest post. I’ve only started a blog last month and I’m loving it so far. I know audiences don’t grow over night so I’m hoping to stay consistent and as long as I love what I’m doing that’s all that matters.

As someone who just posted their first blog post he other day I really appreciate these tips ! Your blog is my absolute aesthetic goal in life

  20. September 12, 2016 / 10:32 pm

I just saw this post through another of your posts and it has really brightened up my day. I have been working on my new blog and sometimes I wonder if it’s worth it and if anyone will actually see it and this has just made me feel so much better.

Even if only one person reads it, that’s better than none and I might brighten their day like your posts seem to do to mine (it also helps that we have a mutual love of our sausage dogs, I am obsessed!!)
