The winding road leading up to Crathorne Hall is surrounded by fields and trees, so on a sunny September afternoon, it seemed to look even more magnificent than I remember. We felt like we had been instantly transported, the grounds are grand, yet welcoming. I had heard good things about the afternoon tea at Crathorne Hall I am a huge fan of afternoon tea, I mean mini cakes, scones with clotted cream and jam, what’s not to love, right? 
We were taken to the grand dining room, I felt like I was in a period drama, and I was loving every second of it. The light pouring in from the windows was beautiful.
We were offered a glass of Champagne before our selection of dainty sandwiches, mini cakes, and pastries along with scones with clotted cream and jam arrived. We were so excited!
The staff kindly offered us re-fills and described everything to us, we had a selection of delicate sandwiches including Yorkshire ham with mustard, cucumber and cream cheese, smoked salmon lemon and dill mayonnaise and Wensleydale cheese with tomato chutney. Now for my favourite part, the fresh warm scones with a generous helping of Yorkshire clotted cream and jam, they were absolutely heavenly. what do you spread on the scone first… the cream or the jam? Are you hungry yet? We also had mini lemon meringue pies, pistachio cake topped with buttercream and crushed pistachios, mini lemon meringue pies and white chocolate and raspberry mousse, dreamy. Afternoon tea never looks a lot but we were so full by the time we’d finished! I loved how grand the rooms and buildings were, yet the staff were so warm and friendly, it felt like nothing was too much trouble!
I love that afternoon tea at Crathorne Hall changes with the seasons, quite literally… their menu changes at least six times year… in October they have a special chocolate-themed afternoon tea. Chocolate afternoon tea? It doesn’t get any better than that *drools*. Isn’t that such a nice, unique touch… so if I went for my birthday in March, it would be a totally different experience and menu than our visit this time in September. I’m pretty sure that’s just me finding an excuse to go and indulge in afternoon tea more often…
My mum also had a lovely afternoon, and is planning a return visit in December, imagine those gardens in the snow… I bet they have impressive Christmas tree’s in that beautiful corridor too… Dreamy.

Crathorne is one of my favourite places. And yes it DOES look magnificent at Christmas! We are hosting our Murder Mystery Evening there this November ( with a Christmas 1920’s theme!) for Zoes Place Baby Hospice. Can’t wait!

The jam and cream debate depends on whether you are Cornish or from Devon. A Cornish cream tea has jam and then cream on top. The correct way (in my opinion), being from Devon, is cream first and then jam – because the cream takes the place of the butter… 🙂 Either way, any excuse for an afternoon tea is fab!!
