Make your flowers last longer

How to make your flowers last longer. I get quite a few comments every now and again on instagram and twitter about my fresh flowers. The truth is they don’t have to cost a fortune, I never spend a lot of money on mine! I always buy my flowers from Tesco, Lidl or Aldi, sometimes they are reduced but if not I never spend over £5.00. Just because they are reduced this doesn’t mean they are no good. Here’s some simple tips on how to make your flowers last longer because if you’re going to pay to have pretty bouquets around the house you want them to last as long as possible..

make your flowers last longer

Cut the stems at an angle.
Doing this allows the stems to easily take up water, if possible cut the stems with sharp scissors under water, I do mine in my sink. This ensures the stems don’t get damaged and they aren’t exposed to air when you cut them. Sharp scissors mean the stems don’t get crushed and ensure a clean-cut.

Keep them away from direct sunlight.
Flowers on my kitchen table always wilt and die much quicker than anywhere else. This is because my kitchen has a glass roof, this causes the flowers to get too hot, so they wilt much quicker!

Just the right temperature.
I had no idea, flowers last a lot longer in luke warm water, each time I would just fill up the vase with freezing cold tap water, totally oblivious. Just me?

Remove any leaves below the water line
This helps to keep the water as clean as possible, but it is best to change the water daily, to keep it nice and fresh.

A spoonful of sugar.
Adding a spoonful of sugar (or two) and mixing it into the water in the vase, will help keep your flowers around for a little bit longer. (Who doesn’t feel a bit better after some sugar, right?)

Clean your vase thoroughly.
Flowers and water (especially old, water) can cause your vases to become pretty gross. It’s important that a vase is squeaky clean before adding fresh water and flowers, otherwise bacteria will block the stems of your flowers and can cause them to wilt!

So there you have it my simple tips on how to make your flowers last longer, I absolutely love fresh flowers, in my opinion there is nothing better to brighten up a room. what do you think? if you have any tips or suggestions you use please let me know in the comments 🙂 How do you make your flowers last longer?

Great tips, Becky! If I’m buying a bouquet of tulips (my favourites) then I always pop a copper penny in the bottom of the vase, which I’ve been told stops the tulips from wilting – always worked well in my experience! Xx

I have always cut my stems at an angle and removed low leaves, but thanks for the spoonful of sugar tip and I would never have thought about using warmer water either!

What great ideas, my flowers never seem to last unless I’m lucky and buy a good bunch- best flowers I’ve found have come from Co-Op for some reason? Weird!

I’m a new lifestyle blogger – it would mean a lot if you could check out my blog? http://littlegreenfancy.blogspot.co.uk – thanks!

Fantastic! I just moved to South Florida and the flower shops are in abundance down here. Definitely wanting to make fresh flowers a constant in my home.

One more; don’t keep flowers next to your fruit! I do all of the above except for the sugar, but that’s because I don’t have any sugar at home. 🙂

I love having fresh flowers around the house, but keeping them is always such a pain.
I had no idea that adding sugar, or using lukewarm water prolongs the life of your blooms; I’ll just have to it out! Thanks for the tips! 🙂

Definitely bookmarking this post! I went to the flower market for my birthday back in July and I definitely could have used a few tips considering most of the beautiful bouquets died within a few days.

What a useful post, Becky! I finally figured out why my flowers never last very long, I leave them by the window!! I heard you can add vinegar too, but I haven’t seen any significant results with that. Love your blog name! I am from Taiwan, so I am obsessed with bubble tea (as should everyone!). So glad to have stumbled upon your post!

Thank you for these tips! Sometimes I have trouble keeping flowers around, this will help a lot.

This is so needed! Especially in fall and winter, I always feel any flowers I get are either freezing to death (maybe cause I would personally be so) or suffocating from lack of oxygen cause all windows and doors would be shut!
    I love this post!! ^_^
