It is so important to practice self care. In today’s world where everyone is running around with their heads in their phones, be it tweeting, texting or emails. As well as juggling a social life, maybe a family and long work hours it can become very easy to neglect yourself. It is vital to look after yourself, mind, body and soul or you’ll find yourself seriously burnt out somewhere down the line. Here are some simple, easy and effective ways how to practice self care on a daily basis.

Self care for the body:

Take 5 minutes.
Take 5 minutes each evening to relax, sit and moisturise your whole body, give yourself a mini facial, paint your nails. It’s amazing how these little changes make you feel a lot better about yourself.

Spend some time outside.
Go for a walk, have a picnic, just sit somewhere peaceful and switch off whilst enjoying the fresh air, whatever the weather. Try it, you’ll be surprised what a little fresh air can do!

Get enough sleep.
It’s well-known sleep has a huge effect on your mood. So switch your phone off, go to bed that little bit earlier, if you are tired on a weekend have a quick nap, the world won’t end! As an adulating adult…I prefer to call them horizontal life pauses.

Check yourself!
It can be very easy to put things off when it comes to your health. Book your smear test, go to the doctors, keep an eye on that mole, check your breasts…often. It is much better to be safe than sorry

Self care for the mind:

Start a compliment diary.
You are your own harshest critic, so try to keep notes either on your phone or in a small notebook when someone compliments you. That way when you are having a bad day or  a low self-esteem day you can look back on these compliments and hopefully feel a little better. It is amazing how quickly we forget the good things and dwell on the negative.

Keep the space around you de-cluttered.
Tidy house, tidy mind, at least that’s what works for me. I always feel much more relaxed when the area around me isn’t cluttered. Take 5 minutes out of the day to do a mini de-clutter of things you don’t really need. That way its easier to stay on top of things and it won’t get on top of you. (literally)

Stay away from drama and negativity.
As well as in the real world, drama and negativity can often be found and seen online. Especially in school and friendship groups… If you prefer to distance yourself from it without drawing more attention to it simply ‘mute’ people on twitter or ‘unfollow’ people on Facebook.

Stop putting that ‘thing you have been meaning to do’ off
Ok. I will hold my hands up…I do this a lot. If you just do it, when it needs doing, then it’s done, you don’t have to think about it anymore or have it at the back of your mind.

Self care for the soul

Be of service.
Find little ways to help people in daily life, carry someones bags, hold a door, it doesn’t have to be a big grand gesture, just small acts of kindness.

Treat yo’self
Don’t forget to treat yourself every now and again… you deserve it! Buy the chanel lipstick, order that double cheese pizza!

Don’t be afraid to say no!
Follow your instinct, if you really don’t want to go on that work night out then don’t, have a night in and recharge your batteries. You have the right to refuse and the right to say no.

Create simple joyful rituals
Add little happy things to your everyday routine, even simple things like taking 20 minutes before bed to have a hot chocolate with whipped cream and settle down with a book.

    Great tips, i really need to work on the getting things done as soon as they occur. I try to do some yoga and meditation at least 3 times a week as soon as i wake up. I find this helps me start the day off right and helps keep me calm and focused throughout the day!

    Meditation is a very important one for me. I try to do at least 10 minutes each day to help me stay present- can be a challenge though.

    It is SO important that we make time to switch off and just be with ourselves at least once a week! We all spend so much of our time online and the effects of that are going to start rearing their ugly head. I swear, I always feel my best when I’ve actually gone an entire day without being attatched to my phone. I’ve been out in the world, not looking at it through an Instagram feed, and spoke to real people instead of over Twitter. I have cooked a delicious mean instead of watched YouTube and I’ve ate it without taking one picture or thinking about making a blog post out of it.

    Remember when life used to be like this?

    Such great tips!! I have started the moisturise before bed ritual recently n it makes such a difference, such a good wind down b4 bed too… no iPad or phones before bed lol

    Going to get a compliment diary today!! I really love writing things down , when I read that I was like… OF COURSE!!! Why didn’t I think of this 100 years ago ?
    I’m very blessed to be going to South Korea tomorrow from London for 2 months to take time out to travel and study the language. I have a lot to be grateful for I have really good friends who have supported me a lot this past year. Now is time for me to take a break and some me time to jus work on myself and see myself how my friends see me rather than comparing myself to other girls.

    this is an important article in this day and age. i like your tips on taking care of yourself physically. i have a routine where i use rosewater to clean my skin everyday and sometimes i use almond oil to massage skin n hair. i like the idea of treating urself every now n then. it keeps the spirits up:) n soul happy. i buy fashion related stuff or a book to treat myself. exercising n eating healthy food is a good way of treating urself too:).

    I just wanted to add, having a hot bath before bedtime!, It is relaxing and ‘detoxing’ for the mind, at least it is for me. Plus it gives you a good reason to wash the face, which has been subject, to all sorts of dirt and particles during the day! Try it right before putting on pajamas and reading that book! ^_^

    I like the starting a compliment diary one and the create simple joyful rituals. I think I might try them! And i keep saying i need to get more sleep and that but it just doesnt work because i put too much thought into doing it or something, i dont know haha. Thank you for your tips xxxx

    I have found it very helpful to keep a Sleep and Self Care Diary. I shared my diary template at — it warns you to be careful opening the link, but it just contains the diary as a pdf and as an Excel sheet in case you want to personalize it.
